A new modern highway connecting the Wairarapa with Wellington and the World

Wayne Montgomery

"I have been driving this road for 34 years. Back in 1991 it took 65 mins to travel from Masterton to Upper Hutt, it now takes anywhere from 80 to 85 mins depending on the day. The hill road is no longer fit for purpose, especially with the increase in logging and other trucks, these trucks are now longer and carrying heavier loads. Some of these trucks are unable to navigate certain corners of the hill without crossing over to the the otherside. The reduction and shortening of passing lanes has caused more safety issues. I am of the opinion that the NZ Transport agency has a poor understanding of issues facing comuters re the Hill. There has has been one positive move I have seen, which is the night closures for maintenance."
