A new modern highway connecting the Wairarapa with Wellington and the World
Amy Thomson
The existing hill road is frustrating unreliable and dangerous. It is a major highway and is used by heavy vehicles and commuters. It is the one real like between Wellington and the Wairarapa. The alternate route isn't a viable option for many if the hill is closed. Living at the base of the hill we see how often there are accidents, big and small. Driving the hill is scary most of the time. A lot of drivers are not equipped to handle the mountain pass and often underestimate the sharpness of the corners and the width of the oncoming trucks. The constant closures for repairs are expensive and restrictive. How this road is one of our main state highways is beyond me. It should have been prioritised years ago and it's disappointing to hear it wasn't even being considered in the 10 year plan
