I travel over at least 4 return trips per week. Some involve getting to Wellington airport. The frequency of accidents closing this major State highway with no viable alternative option has become unacceptable. the lack of information when there is an accident about expected time to reopening is also unacceptable. Recently one passing lane was damaged and is now close, while a subsidence required traffic lights for many months even with frequent overnight total closures. The previous National Government, after the GFC, made this road a road of national significance. It was improved somewhat as a result but since then the status and priority has been lost. One suspects money has gone into unneeded and unwanted pedestrian crossing humps, wire barriers and cycleways instead.
