A new modern highway connecting the Wairarapa with Wellington and the World

Rhonda Fitzpatrick

We need a reliable access route to and from the Wairapapa. I'd prefer a route without a tunnel so that all vehicles (including hazard carry ones) can use the route, less maintenance, likely would need to be closed after any good earthquakes until safety inspections passed (or failed - eck!). Slight increase or decrease in travel is not as important as having confidences that the road will be be open 24x7. I'd support having a Toll on the road. Casual users & Commercial user should pay more. Regular commuters should be able to purchase a discounted "monthly pass", so that the cost for daily use is not prohibitive. To ensure a new road stays within an agreed budget, ensure the project stays focused on its objective and does not suffer cost blow out by adding in expensive lookout points multi lanes, over engineered cycleways (if req'ed) etc. PS: If the road has to cater for cyclists, then they should also pay the same toll rates as other vehicle users (I have some ideas on how this could be implemented).
